Wonderful!
I came to this series recently, just long enough to wait for the last book. I read them all straight through and I have to say, I absolutely adore it. This book is a very nice send off to the Nightrunners (if the author chooses it be the last, which in the afterward she's noted it might be, but you know writers! The characters come back to them and poke them to do another book eventually, years later). This one had a lot of adventure, a mystery that the solution eludes you until the end, and lots of twists and turns inbetween. As always she's fun to read and it doesn't ever lull, thoroughly enjoyable! If you've enjoyed the series so far, you will love this one too!

Perfectly Balanced, Great for a relaxed night of reading.
Another great story by Flewelling!I thoroughly enjoy this series, along with the Tamir Series. It is total mind candy, but well written and envisioned. Detailed enough to make it interesting, without clouding it with too much material as seen in some fantasy. In my opinion, strikes a nice balance by adding enough mystery, back story, adventure, and light romance. While some may guess the outcome, there is still enough surprise to keep you turning the pages. This is a series I have read more than once.Note: a book for the open- minded.Which I hope include most Fantasy readers.

"Hello, mine."
I love this entire Nightrunner series - so, am a bit slanted in my reading. This covers a lot of new territory while bringing round all the familiar cast. Well worth a read. A nice blend of action, magic, sass, and sappiness. I think the real winner for me in all of the series (but brought nicely to a head on p. 392 in the paperback), is that the two central male heroes and lovers are simply a part of the world around them. The story is always at the forefront. The moments taken for a bit of softness or reassurance, or, on this particular page, intimacy, are simply part of the bigger picture. Unlike much of fiction featuring gay characters, these two don't live in a spotlighted vacuum. The world doesn't revolve around them, nor does the story serve as an excuse to dole out soft porn. It's a flesh and blood story. Flewelling is masterful at laying out and staying true to her world. And that means a lot to me as a reader. [Edited add-on some afterthoughts.]: There were some details that stuck with me that I wanted to follow-up on. At one point, while looking at cave paintings a detail of a missing finger in the imprints caught my attention. It was a nice dimensional detail and I knew I'd read something like it about caves in France (Grotte de Gargas). I also like how nimbly the writing can change and hold different characters perspectives. The voice of each character is distinct - and as soon as you are seeing through Alec, Seregil, or even young Mika's eyes - you know it. The tone of the story stays consistent, but that person's voice shines through.

Great at least temporary ending for a wonderful series
I only discovered the Nightrunner series three years ago. I immediately read (and loved) every book Ms Flewelling has published, but confess the Nightrunner books have been my favorites. This story offers a new locale, and introduces a lot of interactions with ghosts, demons and other supernatural beings, as well as some magical creatures with which readers of the series will be familiar. It of course focuses on our "old favorites" from the earlier books - Seregil, Alec, Mikum and Thero, but also brings Thero's new apprentice, Mika, to vivid and engaging life, and shows us Thero and Klia's relationship, which began in previous stories, but was never particularly pertinent to the plot. The ending was also very satisfying - enough threads left open for potential future tales, should Ms. Flewelling decide to write them, but enough closed to satisfy even this die-hard Seregil and Alec fan.I also loved how the mystery at the beginning of the tale is so strange that no one can explain what's happening. Various supernatural (vs magical) possibilities loom and create a nice air of creepy mystery. As the plot progresses and the mystery begins to unravel, perfectly valid reasons for much of the mystery are found, but never spoil the plot. Nicely handled.Definitely a recommended read. Though you can read it as a stand-alone, you'll enjoy it much more if you've read at least a couple of the earlier Nightrunner books because of the added character development and depth that "history" will give you.Long live the queen's Nightrunners!

Memorable, Excellent, Another "Nightrunner" grand slam!
I am a huge fan of the Nighrunner series and this book did not disappoint. Ms. Flewelling is an exceptional writer and her books are on my top 3 list of favorities along with "Lord of the Rings" and the "Harry Potter, series - in no particular order. To anyone who is considering this book/series for a good read - do not hesitate - jump right in and enjoy the journey, you will not be disappointed.I am disappointed that this will be her last book in the series, but am hopeful that she will surprise her loyal fans in the future with another Nightrunner book. So for the moment it is adieu to Seregil, Alec, Micum, Thero, Beka, Klia and all the other memorable characters.

a testament to how amazing the entire series is.
"Shards of Time" is an amazing addition to The Nightrunner series. The book delivers a unique and different plot from the previous books, with plenty of magic and a fantastic setting. Once again, the author has managed to portray a different aspect of the world and expand upon the series' mythology. The characters are as engaging and well-developed as ever, and I found myself invested in their journeys from start to finish. The author's writing is engaging and full of suspense, making it hard to put the book down.I have been a fan of The Nightrunner series for a long time, and "Shards of Time" is a testament to how amazing the entire series is.After finishing this book, I found myself missing the characters and dreaming of having news from them. The author has created a world that feels alive and characters that feel like old friends. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.Overall, "Shards of Time" is an excellent addition to The Nightrunner series and highly recommended for fans of fantasy, action, and engaging characters.
