Cy Twombly Review: Changed My Mind About Twombly - For a long time I had dismissed Twombly's art as just childish scribbles and sloppy smears of paint. But I have thought about his work a lot, and kept wondering why he was considered to be so great. One of his teachers was my favorite artist, Robert Motherwell, and he thought very highly of Twombly's work. So after long consideration I bought this book, thinking it would be a comprehensive survey of his work. I began to look and to read, and it dawned on me that he was indeed a great artist. Not easy to cozy up to at first, but worth the effort to try to understand it. He knew what he was doing, and he knew it was great. I am now a fan of his art, and will enjoy this book for many years to come. Beautifully laid out and printed, excellent essays, and the reproductions are crisp and detailed. All in all a beautiful book and well worth having in any contemporary art book collection. Review: Excellent book at a great price - Excellent book and a great value at the price. This is well illustrated and contains multiple essays by those who knew Twombly at all stages of his career. Particularly enjoy early reviews: "Nothing there," says Donald Judd. The New York Times thinks the scribbles are ridiculous. And then the Europeans who loaded up on his work, everything they could get their hands on, after her left unappreciative New York, enthralled by Pop at the time, for Italy where he enjoyed success for the remainder of his life. Nice full page illustrations.
