I had also read about glitter flaking off, so before she wore them, I sprayed a few coats of a clear gloss spray on them and that has seemed to do the trick. The glitter hasn't flaked off at all and she has worn them multiple times. The ends of the strap were slightly frayed when they arrived (which was another complaint I also read about), so I gently ran a match along the ends and that stopped the fraying and you can't even tell that they were fraying in the first place. I looked all over trying to find the perfect Dorothy shoes for my daughter and I am so happy with these! They are so cute and I love that they have a strap.
