Winter Wind provides a literal feel for what takes Lee from isolation and near-total sensory deprivation to return to a near-normal existence. I'd give 4½☆ for the insights into Lee's inner world, managing within his sensory limits. I can even imagine how, after five years with only guidedog Betsie for comfort, companionship, and enough confidence to maneuver through a limited world of habitual routine, Rachel's touch pulls Lee into the whole of life again.The outerworld case, however, isn't as fascinating. As Lee learns new ways to cope, the paranormal aspects gain surreal importance and supersede ordinary casework. While I'm familiar with energy practices and I can construe a scientific basis as a sense-deprived brain compensates by rewiring for other input, the rapidity and ease of tapping his extra-sensory ability seems overly optimistic. Not only does the whole climactic rescue, while tension-filled and perhaps conceivable, stretch beyond my suspension of disbelief capacity but the lack of much real-world detecting does as well. I have been sitting here looking at the screen for quite awhile TRYING to convey into words how Moving this book is.. Losing your sight, hearing and the ability to speak would cause most people to go insane and..end it all.. I honestly believe I would ! To only have my own thoughts to "hear" and my own memories to "see" No music no books .... Could YOU keep your sanity? Detective Lee Jordan , fights to keep his sanity intact and to NOT use the gun in the bedside drawer, with the help of his trusted guide dog Betsey, he adjusts to his "new world" and the LAPD needs him to help solve a case , with the help of translator Rachel ,signing into his hand he learns of "The Big Case" which to me is secondary to his confronting the demons that are now his life.. Then he learns thru the help of a 'Master, Master" a very mystical way to help himself and to put his trust in the unknown . I'm not going to tell you how he does this because I want you to read the book .. There is one paragraph when he first realizes whats happening that I will FOREVER hold in my memory about "Purpose" it was a true "Could this really be the answer" moment for me .. This book is so different than anything I have ever read.. It has adventure, struggles, budding love, anger, resentment , guilt and overcoming such amazing odds.. I want to 'Meet" Lee Jordan and just ..sit with him .. I give this book 5 hugs ..and if you read the book you will know just how important they are!!! Loved it Mr. Rain... After being nearly killed in an explosion (and the death of his partner in that explosion) Homicide Detective Lee Jordan lives alone in an apartment along with his seeing eye dog. Jordan was rendered blind, deaf, mute and with a trachea tube with which to breathe. His world is darkness and silence. But a case comes along and his thinking skills are needed. His Sergeant brings a sign language translator to visit Lee and get his thoughts on this case of more than ten people just up and walking away from their lives within the last year - without leaving a trace.This book makes Lincoln Rhyme look like an athlete. How does one do anything with none of the senses working? Even his olfactory senses have been damaged.To top it off, his sergeant arranges to have an old boxing trainer, Jacky, come to Lee's apartment to teach him boxing to "defend himself" (and to get him interested in something again).Author J. R. Rain rewards the reader with surprise after surprise in this amazing page turner. And it looks as though Rain has many many books that I am going to now be exploring!
