As an example if you are using the Uno r3 to gather data from a temperature sensor, and if the temperature is below a certain point, toggle a relay to turn on a heater, you can do all of that with just this, and add in logging the temperature changes and information on whether the heater has been turned on to a web page. Or use it to sense light levels and turn on the front porch light and then turn it off again 6 hours later or at a time that it compares to an ntp server for. There are 4 GPIO pins on this, rx, tx, G0 and G2. The available libraries that support this device include i2c, the various 1wire devices, and so on. No you can't do SPI, so for now you probably won't be able to do datalogging to a flash card, but you can use the tx/rx pins to send such data to a Uno r3 where you can have SPI devices attached. Or as noted above log it to a server on the network w/o running it to a local flash card if you would like. If you do want to use it as a network bridge for an Uno r3, you will need to program it, and the Uno r3 to support the variation of hayes at+ command syntax, or program this to set up it's own connection and packetize the data coming from the Uno. There will be a learning curve in either case. But attaching an Uno to a wifi router is what it was originally sold to do. It's just a bit more capable than that. **Q: This is the only esp8266 chip that doesnt seem to support having new firmware flashed on it, anyone else have this problem? are these chips** A: You CAN flash the firmware on them, but to a hobbyist, it might seem like a miracle. The trick is in pulling GPIO1 and 2, as well as the reset pin to the appropriate place.
