The 400 series is a heavier weight paper but, the 500 series is a better quality paper. **Q: Does it lie flat when open?** A: One side at a time yes. Both sides you have that binded book hump. The pages are pretty good quality. **Q: do the pages bleed to the next when markers are used?** A: I just tried with a sharpie and you can see it through the paper faintly but significantly.
