Review: Good kit for learning to make modifications. - This kit was great for the purpose I had in mind. Extra storage for MRE bits and pieces and organization of said bits and pieces. The latch is a bit long but when belted it holds together well. The finish is attractive and uniform, I think this would be a good starter kit for someone new to backpacking as you can learn to make modifications and use the kit at a low monetary outlay. Further, they don’t melt if they have something in them, if you put any empty aluminum device into a fire, the paint would burn ant the aluminum would melt. Many other brands warn against heating the pans empty.

**Q: Is it has skin built with this order??**
A: No.  It does not have a cover or pouch.

**Q: Is this worth getting for actual use, like over a fire or with esbit tablets? Or should I just get the real thing?**
A: Works fine on an esbit stove using fuel tabs. Any sooting from the esbit tabs seems to come off if you wipe the bottom of the pot against grass or leaves.

**Q: Will this mess kit fit into a US canteen pouch?**
A: Depends on which canteen pouch, from which iteration of issue canteens.  Probably not if WWII or later.  If the pouch has the smaller bottom to fit the canteen that slants into a smaller bottom than top the straight sides of the mees kit don't adjust to.

**Q: Can I cook with it**
A: I've cooked with mine a few times and it's been just fine, sometimes the tablet cookers can leave a little bit of residue but that's the tablets, not an issue with the can!

This mess kit works well and looks like a real surplus from germany. Personally i prefer this 1 to the surplus because the handle comes off. The fit on the lock for the handle is very loose although you can simply use some string or buy the leather strap that is suppose to be used on these. DO NOT use this on a large campfire as the metal is thin, it will ruin the kit. These are suppose to be used on small esbit burners, camp stoves, sternos, and small campfires. It also has alot of space inside to store your stuff if u go to a reeanactment, hiking, or camping. Mine did arrive damaged and dented so be weary. But it just makes it look like it has been through a battle or 2! Perfect for airsoft.
