A fun read possibly with a serious subtext

This book can (and probably should) be read as a nice bit of fun as it tracks the attempt to ruin a particular entrepreneur through the court of public opinion while the entrepreneur himself gets our heroine to try to figure out who and why. The villains are en amusing collection: a sleazy trial lawyer, a media investor as well as a scummy politician and assorted mafia sorts. The heroine is a snarky Harvard MBA student who seems to have worked out how to play the system.A lot of the action takes place in Hollyweird and the greater Lalaland part of California so there's plenty of Southern California stereotypes to mock as well. All of this is good, and droll, and enjoyable. But there's a possible serious subtext about how ethically challenged trial lawyers and media moguls can ruin innocents in ways that are actually worse than the mafia crooks they hook up with (in this book). It's not a big part of the book, but it does give the book a bit more depth than it would have as a light-hearted crime novel

    Thoroughly delightful!

This is the most engaging page-turner I’ve read in a long time! I rarely read fiction anymore, but after finding Mr. Meyer’s blog I was happy to try his novel, and I was well rewarded. For starters, the writing is excellent; I’m a professional editor and take a special pleasure in reading prose that doesn’t distract me from the story by awkwardness, misusage, etc. (The proofing and copyediting--on the Kindle version, at least--were problematic, but never mind.) The story was clever and along the lines of Christopher Buckley’s light social satires, but completely original. The main characters were memorable and at least two-dimensional, which is all we can ask from such a genre. I read the book in the longest stretches I could manage, hating to stop. In fact, it was so absorbing that as I neared its end, I missed not one but two subway stops and got to work half an hour late.Reader complaints about the language seem ridiculous. The book is PG-rated at worst. Those who mind a little realism in their books should stick to reading children’s books written before 1960.So Mr. Meyer, when will you give us another treat?

Much much better than I expected

Much much better than I expected. I highly recommend this book. I have read many first novels by bloggers turned fiction writers and for the most part they have been adequate with a couple of clunkers. I bought BMOC on Kindle as I had read and enjoyed Warren Meyer's blog and the price was right, free with unlimited. I am so glad I took t he chance, the book is delightful. It is fast paced, suspenseful and very funny. The characters are quirky but believable...well kinda believable but it does not matter as the pace moves along from one surprise to the next with hilarious send-ups of everything from Harvard to TV News to clerks at Macy's.However under the quirky characters and humor lies and insight into our world and how it operates. There is a message, but it is not the usual shallow Hollywood pap it is a message delivered with insight, fun and good humor.
