It is very hard material and they have to push it around with their nose and their paws. It is not a ball to carry around in their mouths nor one to chew on. I think a lot of the poor reviews for this product were due to folks not knowing what the ball is designed for.Our Australian Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix LOVES this ball. He is about 40 lbs. Originally I had one of the much larger balls which he also loved but it was so heavy he would rub his nose and paws raw moving it about. With this size he is able to herd it about the property with joy and abandon and his nose and paws are no worse for the effort.These are great toys for dogs with high herding instinct. I plan on getting a couple more to see what he will do when there is more than one to play with.I put this ball away and only allow my dog to play under supervision. He will herd it in the flaming hot son, he will get upset if it goes into the bushes or flowers and he will do whatever he thinks necessary to get it back out, so for his safety and the safety of my plants he only gets it for short bursts of time and always under supervision. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Nice quality but all dogs are not going to use ... *by S***S on September 10, 2014* The odd thing is the large ball was bought for 95 lb.
